Description

The original "Journey into Imagination" attraction opened on March 5, 1983. It began with the omnimover vehicles “floating” in the clouds and seeing the silhouette of a strange blimp mixed with a vacuum cleaner and hearing the humming and singing of its pilot. In the next scene the riders come right next to this vessel and the pilot, an old man with a red beard dressed in a blue suit and top hat, introduces himself as the Dreamfinder and saying that he uses his vehicle, called the Dream Catcher, to collect dreams and ideas to create all sorts of new things.

Soon he creates a figment of his imagination: "Two tiny wings, eyes big and yellow, horns of a steer, but a loveable fellow! From head to tail, he's royal purple pigment, and there, Voila! You've got a Figment!" He aptly names is creation Figment!

Loved these guys as a kid! What a lot of memories this piece brought back! And the music from the Sherman Brothers is always memorable!

I rode the original ride as a child, when it was literally days away from closing. The Imagination Center was all but empty, there was nobody in line... it was essentially dead. But the ride itself was filled with magic for me. Most of my memories from those days are confusing or horrid, but this is one of the few that are bright. I was instantly obsessed, and we must have gone through at least three times in a row. I still have the Figment puppet from that day, his purple faded, snout twisted, and balding patches on his cheeks from years of love and cuddling at night. This picture and the videos you linked brought all that back to me. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I didn't know that these films existed, given how strict Disney is with protecting their proprietary material. It's nice to relive such a happy piece of the past in a time where I can now remember it better. Many have forgotten Dreamfinder, but it still fills me with pride that Figment still has his corner of Epcot to spread joy to kids.
